VDD detains a person on suspicion of espionage on behalf of Russian intelligence and security service

On 20 December 2023, Latvian State Security Service (VDD) detained a Russian citizen on suspicion of espionage for Russian intelligence and security service.

The criminal case against this person was initiated on 18 December 2023 pursuant to Section 85 Paragraph 1 of the Criminal Law, i.e., illegal collecting of non-disclosable information as well as other information and transferring it to a foreign intelligence service on its behalf.

The information obtained during VDD’s investigation shows that the person collected and passed on to Russian intelligence and security service the information about the critical infrastructure and military facilities in Latvia. According to the information at the disposal of VDD, the person also provided other types of support to Russian intelligence and security service in ensuring activities directed against the State of Latvia.

VDD has carried out criminal proceedings on five sites related to the person in Riga and its surroundings. A large amount of data carriers and documents has been seized for in-depth investigation.

The suspect has been remanded in custody as a security measure.

VDD will provide additional information on the progress of the investigation according to the progress of the criminal case.
